At Greyston Bakery we love giving back to the local community! As we finish up our 2013 Annual Benefit Report we have been thinking a lot about the very successful volunteer event that we held last year. Our employees got their hands dirty pulling garbage directly out of the Saw Mill River and managed to record an impressive total of 222 sweet service hours.
Now, our goal is to reach 250 community service hours by the end of 2014 and we are off to a great start! On June 20th Greyston Bakery joined forces with 11 other New York Tri-State B’s to fight hunger in the Westchester County community. Over 50 enthusiastic volunteers met at the Food Bank for Westchester’s warehouse in Elmsford, NY and worked hard to pack over 2,900 pounds of pasta, providing at least 2,000 meals for our hungry neighbors. We also got a tour of the facility, which acquires, packs, and distributes food to serve the estimated 200,000 Westchester residents who are at risk of hunger. The pasta that we packed could go to any of the 265 hunger-relief programs served by the Food Bank, including food pantries, group homes, treatment centers, low-income daycare centers, soup kitchens, and a ‘BackPack’ program that sends kids home with nutritious food. It felt amazing to donate our time to such a worthy cause!
After a few hours of packing pasta and learning about the Food Bank’s operations, we brought everyone back to Greyston Bakery for a BBQ Lunch and Learn. Fellow B’s got a tour of the bakery, information about our core policies, and plenty of delicious brownies and cookies!
A big shout out to our B Corp friends who participated: Armonia, Carnegie Fabrics, Charter School Business Management, Closed Loop Advisors, Down to Earth Markets, Etsy, Full Circle Home, Hilary’s Eat Well, Susty Party, sweetriot, and UncommonGoods
We had a fantastic time meeting everyone and spreading some love in our community. We are already planning more events for this year so that we can continue making a difference and reach our 250 hour target!
